Comeback Daniil Medvedev Secures Maiden Championship in 882 Days

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev won his initial championship for 882 days with victory over opponent Moutet in the competition final.

The athlete, a former world number one, has endured a difficult year, achieving just one win at the big events and experiencing a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's unpredictability on the professional circuit - and issues with his serving in particular - resulted in him falling of the top ten and eventually splitting with long-time mentor Cervara.

Currently working with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, the tennis star has gradually improved in the past month - culminating in a hard-fought competitive triumph over challenger Moutet.

This marks Medvedev's initial championship since the Italian tournament and maiden on a hardcourt from March of 2023.

Victory also means Medvedev has achieved 21 victories at twenty-one distinct events.

"It's the first time I'm at a event with my two daughters simultaneously, so to secure a trophy is particularly special," stated world number 14 Medvedev.

"This title is in dedication of my child Victoria, because the initial championship I got when my older daughter her name was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had failed in his previous six championship matches, including in that event previously this season.

The player's counter-punching play style and regular outbursts on court had caused some to question if his ability to play at the elite level was concluded.

Yet the athlete has made changes in the last few weeks, striving to come to the net and play positively, backed up by an enhanced serve.

He recovered from a break down in the opening set against the tricky Moutet, taking four of the final five games to go ahead.

The competitors exchanged break points in the second set before the Frenchman, striving for his initial professional championship, gained dominance to push for a decider.

The opponent rescued four early-game break points in a competitive final set before the champion broke to 15 to serve for the match.

Appropriately, he secured the win with a shot at the net, with the Frenchman unable to handle a return after a lengthy match.
